What the hell is a Poppelvej?!

Poppelvej {pronounced pop - el - vei} is the name of the street in Denmark where our winemaker Uffe grew up. Vej is the Danish word for street and poppel træ is Danish for poplar tree. Poppelvej is the street of poplars.
The original street sign, handpainted by Uffe’s great-great-grandfather, hangs on the winery wall above the barrels thanks to a few too many glasses of wine between Uffe, Jens and Nicole one night in Denmark.

Our Story

Katie Spain can tell a story like no-one else we know so here is an excerpt from an article she wrote in 2019. We love you Katie!

“I knew I had to make wine here when I first saw the foothills in 2012.”

Previously, Uffe worked in a boutique Copenhagen wine store and worked vintage for a year in Sonoma, California.

“In Denmark we drank a lot of Australia wines,” he says, “whatever we could get our hands on – mostly Yalumba, Penfolds and Torbreck.”

Uffe wanted to dig deeper.

“I spoke to my boss and he gave me six months off to come over here – as long as I promised to come back.”

After working a vintage at Yalumba, Uffe met his Australian wife Nicole at a music festival in Canberra.

“I was meant to go home three weeks later,” he says.

Love prevailed and the pair split their time between Australia and Denmark before settling in McLaren Vale in 2016 to start their Poppelvej wine brand.

“We rented a house and I made my first vintage – just one tonne of grenache. We exported it all to Denmark and sold it all there.”
